Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Earns First Win of Season over Mercy, 3-0

Garden City, N.Y. - Despite a weather delay which pushed back the start of the game by 90 minutes, the Adelphi University field hockey team notched its first win of the season on Motamed Field against Mercy College on Tuesday evening, 3-0.

Not slowed in the slightest by inclement weather, the Panthers (1-3) hopped out to a two-goal lead on the Mavericks in the first 35 minutes of regulation, giving the hosts a solid advantage which stood for the rest of the contest.

Eight minutes in, Danielle Powers netted her first goal of the season to give the Panthers a 1-0 edge over the Mavericks (1-4). The junior slapped a shot from the right side of the circle to nail the left corner of the cage.

Twelve minutes later, Danielle Kempf knocked in Adelphi's second goal off the redirection of Katelyn Zaneski's shot from the left side of the circle. Adelphi was able to hold off the visitor's for the duration of the first half, as well as outshooting the Mavericks 6-1.

The score remained the same for the first 26 minutes of the second half, until Elissa Frein and Jackie Brown performed the perfect give-and-go off a penalty corner, allowing Frein to put it in the back of the net. The goal marked Frein's second of the season as the lone Panther to have multiple goals thus far.

Leah Savage made her fourth career start in goal for the Panthers, picking up her first win as well. The hosts outshot Mercy, 21-4, overall, and Savage notched a pair of saves.

The Brown and Gold will return to play this weekend, traveling to Franklin Pierce on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest with the Ravens.
