Syracuse, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball program took the final two sets to pick up an opening Northeast-10 Conference victory over Le Moyne College Saturday afternoon.
Adelphi (9-3, 1-0 NE10) won their second straight contest and opened league play with a win, behind double-figure performances from
Sara Bisbe and
Cara McKenzie. The pair combined for 23 kills and eight service aces through four sets. Defensively the pack was led by
Katarina Warburton, who accounted for 26 digs and the offense was paced by
Grace Wegmann who notched 25 assists and 10 digs in the win.
The Panthers captured an opening set victory with a one-kill advantage over the hosting Dolphins (6-4, 0-2 NE10), 25-21. The visitors had taken a 7-4 lead, but the home team stormed back and swung momentum in their favor to move ahead at 9-8. A kill via McKenzie at 20-20 sparked a 5-1 run for Adelphi which closed out the opener in a win.
Le Moyne used 14 kills and a team hitting percentage of .310 in the second frame to take a 25-19 victory to even the match at one-all. The teams traded stretches of points in the third set, battling back and forth to maintain the lead, but a kill from Bisbe made way for the Brown and gold to score five of the last seven points to take the lead in the match.
With Wegmann at the serving line in the fourth and ultimately final set, the team rattled off six straight points to hold a four-point advantage. From then on the Dolphins struggled to regain any type of lead, coming as close as two, but eventually falling by a 25-22 final.
The team returns to their home court on Tuesday, September 18 when they host the University of Bridgeport in non-league action at 7:00 p.m.
