Brookville, N.Y.- After a scoreless first half, a sudden-death goal in overtime led the LIU Post Pioneers past the Adelphi University field hockey team, 2-1, at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium on Saturday.
The Panthers (0-3) held the nation's ninth-ranked team scoreless and also held the edge in overall shots (5-4) over the first over the first 35 minutes, and neither side managed to break through the other's defenses until late in regulation.
With the score tied at zero, both teams held each other off for another 32 minutes, until LIU Post (1-2) took the lead in the 67th minute with a goal from the top of the circle from Sammy Bell.
However, the Panthers responded with just over a minute left in regulation when sophomore,Jackie Brown netted her first goal of the season on a penalty stroke, resulting from a green card on the hosts in the circle.
Less than a minute into overtime, the Pioneers caged a sudden-death victory with a goal by All-American senior Emily Miller from the top of the arc into the left side of the net.
Although suffering the heartbreaking loss, Adelphi out-shot LIU Post 12-11, as well as leading in saves 7-4, with Leah Savage making her third consecutive start for the Panthers.
The Brown and Gold will return to Garden City on Tuesday for a non-conference contest against Mercy College. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
