Volleyball Outlasts LIU Post in Five Sets

Garden City, N.Y. - From two sets to one down, the Adelphi University volleyball team rallied to record a big second regional victory over LIU Post on its home court on Thursday night.

Adelphi (8-3), which swept Molloy on Sept. 5, came from behind to upend a second East Coast Conference (ECC) school and traditional regional powerhouse in a 25-20, 23-25, 20-25, 25-12, 15-11 victory.

A trio of Panthers recorded at least 10 kills in the win, as the team was paced by double-doubles from Sara Bisbe and McKenna Clawson. Clawson tallied a team-best 14 kills along with 13 digs, while Bisbe totaled 13 kills and 11 digs. Cara McKenzie tied Clawson for the team-high with 14 kills and also tallied five block assists, as Adelphi recorded 16 on the night to LIU Post's four.

Katarina Warburton and Rebecca Seeba anchored the back row with a combined 35 digs, while Grace Wegmann ran an offense which hit .214 to LIU Post's .131 with 32 assists.

After trailing 9-4 early in the match, Adelphi went on a 15-6 scoring run over the bulk of the opener, and also pocketed five of the last seven points, en route to winning it. Two tightly-contested sets wen the Pioneers' way up next, as they erased an early deficit in the second set and held on to their own early lead in the third frame.

However, the Panthers restored order in the fourth, hitting .346 with 12 kills and just three attack errors, to send a match to a fifth set for the second time this season.

Kills from Clawson, Madison Canestrari and Sara Madreja helped Adelphi win six of the first nine points in the final set to 15. The Brown and Gold never relinquished its early lead, and though LIU Post ran off four straight points to turn a 10-5 deficit into a 10-9, a kill and an ace from Bisbe, a big solo block from Canestrari and a final finisher from Clawson earned the Panthers the win.

The Panthers hit the road for their NE10 opener this Saturday, Sept. 15, as they head up to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on Le Moyne College at 11 a.m.
