Garden City, N.Y. - A pair of rookies once again led the Adelphi University women's soccer team to a shutout victory in early season action on Wednesday night, as the Brown and Gold scored a 1-0 victory over Pace in its Northeast-10 Conference opener on Motamed Field.
With the Panthers' scheduled home opener, a non-conference tilt against Mercy, postponed last Tuesday evening due to rain, Wednesday's contest marked the squad's first action at home this season.
Rookie forward
Jacklyn Lada tallied her second goal - and second game-winner off the bench in a 1-0 affair - for Adelphi (3-0, 1-0 NE10) in the 44th minute of the first half, as she finished off a pass from
Kerianne Scorce into the back of the net for the difference in the game.
Lada's classmate
Sarah Hofmeier scored her second clean sheet in three starts this season in the Adelphi goal, as she made five saves across 90 minutes of action.
Adelphi had several opportunities to add to its lead in the second half, outshooting the gritty Setters by a 10-5 margin in the half and 16-8 overall, but ultimately relied on strong defense and head's up play from Hofmeier to seal the win.
Pace's best chance to score came late, as Shannon Glenn's free kick seemed destined for the top of the cage in the 71st minute, but Hofmeier lept up and punched the ball over the crossbar en route to preserving the shutout.
The Panthers are back on Motamed Field on Saturday afternoon, as they welcome the Hawks of Saint Anselm College to Garden City for a 3 p.m. NE10 contest.
