Garden City, N.Y. - Two second-half goals led the Adelphi University men's soccer team to a 2-0 win in its Northeast-10 Conference opener against Stonehill College on Tuesday night.
Graduate student
Patrick Guier scored his first goal in an Adelphi (2-1-1, 1-0 NE10) uniform in the 59th minute to break a scoreless tie, before
Christopher Friedlander doubled the Brown and Gold's lead with his first collegiate goal in the 80th minute.
The Panthers were held in check for much of the early action thanks to a strong effort from Billy Troast in the Stonehill (1-2-1, 0-1 NE10) net, as he made three of his seven saves for the game in the first 15 minutes. Conversely, Matt Apiciella later helped the first 45 minutes go by scoreless, as he made two of his three saves in the last 10 minutes of the opening half.
In a game in which the Panthers finished with a 20-5 edge in overall shots, the Brown and Gold finally broke the ice behind the former All-American's foot after over 10 more minutes went by scoreless in the second half. After a scrum for the ball at the top of the box, Guier collected the ball and fired from long range past Troast into the bottom right corner of the cage to make it a 1-0 game.
After several chances went unfinished for the Brown and Gold in the ensuing minutes, the lead was finally doubled as Friedlander finished off a first effort from
Mads Michaelsen. Michaelsen made a long effort from the left corner of the box, which Troast left his line to save, but the latter was unable to control the rebound which was eventually finished in an empty net by Friedlander.
In addition to the edge in shots, the Panthers also held a 13-1 edge in corner kicks.
After playing their first four contests at home on Motamed Field, the Panthers are on the road for their next two, beginning with a 12 p.m. NE10 contest at Saint Michael's on Saturday, Sept. 15.
