Volleyball Drops Pair At Cavalier Classic

North Canton, OH - The Adelphi University volleyball program tripped to North Canton, Ohio to compete in the Cavalier Classic hosted by Walsh University on Friday and Saturday. 

After suffering a 3-2 loss in the opener to the host school, the Panthers also dropped a 1-3 contest to University of Pittsburg at Johnstown. McKenna Clawson recorded double-doubles in both matchups, accoutning for 21 kills and 22 digs on the day. Cara McKenzie set a new career-high in the second game of the day, posting 15 in a four-set loss. 

Adelphi vs. Walsh U (25-15, 25-23, 12-25, 19-25, 10-15)
The team jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the home and host school, Walsh University but dropped the next three sets to fall for the first time in 2018. Adelphi commanded a 15-4 lead early in the first set with the help of five service aces from several players. The Cavaliers posted a 5-3 run but fell short as the teams traded points down the stretch with the Brown and Gold securing a 25-15 win. 

The Panthers overcame a five-point deficit in the second set and rattled off three straight points capped with a solo block from McKenzie to even the second at 15-15. A close race through the end, the visitors took a 2-0 lead in the game to squeak out a 25-23 victory. Walsh U picked up momentum in the third and fourth to force a deciding fifth set in the first game of the tournament. 

Adelphi came within one in the final set, however the Cavaliers put up a 7-0 run to lead 12-5. The Panthers managed a comeback but fell in a 15-10 heartbreaker to start the day. 

Adelphi vs. Pitt.-Johnstown (21-25, 24-26, 25-19, 27-29)
Pitt-Johnstown, which improved to 4-0 on the season, took the first two sets, 25-21 and 26-24, before the Panthers responded with a 25-19 victory in the third set.  However, the Mountain Cats held off Adelphi with a narrow 29-27, to close it out in the fourth. 

The Brown and Gold, who slipped to 1-2 on the year, was led by McKenzie's 15 kills, Sara Bisbe's 12 kills, and Clawson's double-double of 10 kills and 11 digs.

The squad faces a quick turnaround and will take on two Division II opponents on Saturday, September 1 in Bloomsburg and Virginia Union University.
