Garden City, N.Y. - Meeting in the title game for the fourth consecutive season, the top-seeded Adelphi University women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-10 decision to the no. 2 Le Moyne Dolphins Sunday afternoon, after winning five of the previous six meetings.
This is the first title for the Dolphins (19-1) since 2013, when the Panthers (18-2) lost 6-8.Â
Le Moyne got on the board early with back-to-back tallies from Erin McMullen. Alison Stackpole and
Christina Ferrara netted the next two goals, finding ways past Hannah George to bring the game even for what was ultimately the last time. After the 21:18 mark, the 'Phins rattled off the next six goals to run up an 8-2 advantage. The Brown and Gold managed several shots in the early going, but all missed the mark or were stopped by George, who finished with 12 saves.Â
The Panthers got some offensive wind around 13 minutes, scoring three straight, with
Michele Scannell goal sandwiched between two
Kole Pollock strikes. Le Moyne's Bryanna Fazio got the last word in for the visitors before the half came to a close, giving Le Moyne a four-goal edge at the half.Â
An opening goal from Monica Sanna extended the visiting team lead, but
Beth Ann Pierce converted a man up free position possession and Scannell scored to come within three once again. Two free position goals for the Green and White came on three attempts, and pushed their lead out to five with under 18 to play.Â
Adelphi scored three of the final five goals of the game, but the strong-armed Le Moyne defense and stonewall of George kept the Dolphins in the drivers' seat.Â
The women's lacrosse program will await their fate in the NCAA tournament with tonight's selection show on ncaa.com. The show is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. with no. 1 seeds to be released around 8:15 p.m.
