Syracuse, N.Y. - With the help of a 6-2 second half, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse programs advances to the NCAA quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive year with a 13-10 decision over no. 3 LIU Post on Friday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
The Panthers (19-2) were held to seven goals in the opening frame, as the Pioneers (14-6) saw the upper hand with eight going into the break.
Beth Ann Pierce, who was responsible for a team-high four goals in the win was the first to light up in the scoreboard in Adelphi's opening possession. LIU netted an equalizer over five minutes later, due to two turnovers and a stop from
Emma Lemanski.
A 3-1 run in favor of the visiting team put them ahead by two, but tallies from
Michele Scannell and Pierce made it even once more at 4-all. Four of the next seven goals lit up the Pioneer side of the scoreboard, but
Kole Pollock registered a hat trick with under 3:18 to play in the first half to keep it a one-goal contest.
Pierce and Scannell connected for the opening goal of the second half and Adelphi took the lead on a solo shot from
Alison Johnson. Leading scorer for the Green and Gold, Brianna Feldman, converted a free position attempt to tie the game for the final time. Lemanski stopped four big shots taken by LIU Post after being tied 9-9, helping the Brown and Gold put away the next four goals to push ahead.
Lena Riportella accounted for three of the final four to push her season goal total to 58, which ranks second on the team.
Alyssa Gillespie finished with two caused turnovers and was responsible for four draw controls adn four ground balls in the win. As a team, Adelphi held the advantage in nearly every category which included a 9-14 mark in turnovers.
Adelphi will take on the hosting Dolphins of Le Moyne College on Saturday, May 12 at 3:30 p.m. on Ted Grant Field. The winner will continue on to the Final Four, hosted by Tampa University next weekend.
