Baseball Downs New Haven to Guarantee Playoff Berth, 6-1

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team celebrated Senior Day with a Northeast-10 Conference victory, defeating the University of New Haven, 6-1 on Saturday afternoon to guarantee a spot in the league tournament next week.

David Butler, Kory Cassara, Camden Orologio, Robert Sciarrotta, Jack Thorsen, Michael Tarpey, Tyler Warshefskie, and Steven Withers were honored prior to Saturday's noon start, which saw the Panthers fall in the continuation of game one of the series, suspended yesterday due to darkness, in 15 innings, 7-6.

Nonetheless, Adelphi earned a key win behind Tarpey's arm in what was technically game two, as he went seven innings, and scatted one run and seven hits against the Southwest Divison's first-place team.

Brett Malm led the Panthers at the plate, going 2-for-3, with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored. His two-run homer in the fifth capped off Adelphi's offense, while Steven Withers and Tyler Becker both went 2-for-4 in the lead-off and two-hole for the home team - with the latter extending his hitting streak to 22 games.

The Brown and Gold got off to a hot start, putting two on the board in the first inning. Back-to-back RBI singles from Thomas Colombo and Lucas Terwilliger gave the Panthers the two-run edge to start the game.

The Panthers plated two more in the second inning to double their lead, 4-0. Adelphi's third run was credited to Withers after Becker dropped a double into center field for a hit in his 22nd straight game, and immediately after, Brett Malm put the Panthers up four runs when he brought Becker home off a base hit to left field.

With Tarpey throwing a shutout to that point, a two-run bomb to left field off the bat of Malm extended Adelphi's lead by two more runs, making the score 6-0 going into the sixth.

The Chargers got on the board for the first time in the next frame off a solo home run by Tom Walraven - however, the Blue and White went hitless against Mark Novello in the final two innings in relief to drop game two of the series.

The Brown and Gold's victory secures a slot in the playoffs for the 13th time under head coach Dom Scala. Tomorrow's single game against the Chargers will close out the series, as well as the regular season. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
