Garden City, N.Y. - In its final game of the regular season, the Adelphi University baseball team edged out the University of New Haven, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon to win the rubber game of this weekend's three-game series.
Strong defense and pitching by the hosts assisted in the Northeast-10 Conference victory, securing Adelphi the No. 3 seed going into the conference playoffs next week against the team directly ahead of it in the standings.
Michael Demarest started on the hill for the Panthers, throwing a career-best 6.1 innings and allowing one run on six hits with four strikeouts. With the bases loaded and two outs on the board, Mark Novello took the mound to strikeout his first batter and hold New Haven from scoring in the seventh, as he pitched 2.1 innings to earn his first save of the season.
Adelphi's (26-17-1, 14-9 NE10) first hit of the game was credited to Tyler Becker, as the sophomore shortstop extended his hitting streak to 23 consecutive games. Becker, Michael Cattani, Steven Withers and Brett Malm all tallied one hit in Sunday's victory, as New Haven allowed just five baserunners overall but lost the pitchers' duel.
The score remained 0-0 until the sixth frame, where two base hits by Cattani and Withers allowed Becker's sacrifice fly to put one on the board for the Panthers. One batter later, Malm's double to left field drove home Withers to give Adelphi the 2-0 lead.
The Chargers' (34-8, 16-8 NE10) single run came in the seventh, off an RBI single by PJ Contreras after Joe Caico took advantage of a passed ball to get on third.
Both squads will face off once again on Tuesday, May 8, to kick-off the NE10 playoffs in West Haven, Conn.
