Softball Upended by Assumption, 8-4

North Andover, Mass. - The Adelphi University softball team's foray into cross-divisional play came to an end on Sunday evening, as the Panthers dropped a single game to Assumption College, 8-4, on the campus of Merrimack College.

A five-run second inning set the tone for the Greyhounds (10-6, 5-1 NE10) in the game, which turned a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 lead. Assumption added three more runs in the fifth to seemingly put the game out of reach, as Adelphi scored a run in the sixth and seventh innings before ultimately falling.

Brenna Martini hit her sixth home run of the season for the Panthers (17-14-1, 9-3-1 NE1) in the sixth inning, part of a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs. Emily Turney also went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the seventh spot in the lineup, while both Nicoletta Cuccio and Elisabeth Berard had a hit and scored a run.

With two outs and a runner on first as a result of a hit by pitch, the second inning spiraled away from Nicole Mengel as the Greyhounds took advantage of an infield single and two walks to tie the game, before Hayley Drakoulakos cleared the bases with a three-run triple.

Mengel was unable to get out of the inning and gave way to Jessica Vadala, who allowed an RBI infield single to Kayla Peabody before recording a strikeout to cap the inning and the freshman's line, which was closed at 1.2 innings with two hits, three walks and five runs.

The Panthers got a run back in the fourth on Turney's RBI triple, which scored Kailah Konkel to make it 5-2, but two singles, a triple and an error led to three more runs for the Greyhounds in the bottom of the fifth.

Assumption's Kendall Roy went the distance for her sixth win of the season, as she scattered eight hits, four runs, two walks and five strikeouts over seven innings.

The Panthers will look to get back on the winning track on Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to Pace University for a single, Southwest Division contest. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
