TOP 10: #2 Women's Lacrosse Trumps #6 LIU Post in Non-League Rivalry

Brookville, N.Y. - With NCAA implications on the line, the no. 2 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team took on no. 6 LIU Post in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. With a one-goal advantage in each half, the Panthers came out triumphant, finishing off a 7-5 decision.

Adelphi (11-1, 9-0 NE10) snapped the Pioneers (9-2, 4-0 ECC) home win streak with the victory at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium. Michele Scannell led the Panthers in the win, posting four points behind two goals and two assists. Five other players recorded a lone goal as Emma Lemanski picked up five saves between the pipes for the win. The visitors held the upper hand in nearly every category except draw controls and free position shots, as LIU Post's Olivia Kirk collected a career-best 17 saves.

Scoring started out slow, as the first goal for either team came after 12 minutes of work. Alyssa Gillespie got the Panthers on the board in a man-up possession. LIU Post answered nearly four minutes later, but Adelphi was able to return the lead to their side with an Alison Johnson goal after a host turnover. The teams traded goals down the stretch, with the Brown and Gold getting the last word with Scannell's second strike of the first half to put the hosts back by one at the break.

The Pioneers remained trailing for the rest of the contest, as the Panthers extended their lead coming off of halftime as Beth Ann Pierce found a way by Kirk. After taking a 6-4 lead, Adelphi recorded seven shots on goal before they struck again, this time Kole Pollock buried an unassisted shot to keep the home team down by three. The visiting team had more opportunities to increase the host deficit but Kirk held strong for the GReen and Gold in the cage.

LIU Post got in the last word scoring-wise, but even with the next draw control victory, Kaitlyn Stackpole caused a turnover in Adelphi's defensive third which she sent down field as time expired.

Adelphi women's lacrosse is back to work on Wednesday, April 11 when they travel for their first of three NE10 road games at Bentley University. Opening draw control is set for 3:00 p.m.
