North Andover, Mass. - The Adelphi University softball team saw its 13-game unbeaten streak snapped at the hands of the Merrimack College Warriors on Saturday afternoon in a pair of close contests, 2-0 and 3-2.
In a rematch of last season's Northeast-10 Championship game, the Panthers' arms were out-dueled by the Merrimack duo of Megan Cook and Bridget Soraghan, who recorded two wins and a save between them across the afternoon, allowing just eight hits and striking out 13.
Adelphi (17-13-1, 9-2-1 NE10) got a pair of two-hit games from
Brenna Martini, who went 2-for-3 in each of the two contests, while
Krista King went 3-for-7 in the leadoff spot with a run scored in game two. Four different players drove in a run for Merrimack (19-7, 6-4 NE10) across the afternoon, while Cook also went 3-for-7 with two runs scored with her bat.
Adelphi was stymied across seven innings by Cook in game one, in which the Warrior starter went the distance and struck out eight in seven innings of work, and the Panthers managed to get just one runner into scoring position over the first five innings of the nightcap.
The Brown and Gold made a late push in the second game as they sought a split on the afternoon, scoring a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh, but Cook was brought in with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth and earned the save to close out her afternoon.
The Panthers are back in action on Sunday evening against the Assumption College Greyhounds, as the cross-divisional doubleheader will also be played at Merrimack. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
