Garden City, N.Y. - Career milestones and broken records highlighted a 19-3 victory for Adelphi women's lacrosse over Southern Connecticut State University Wednesday evening, under the lights at Motamed Field.
Senior captain
Michele Scannell notched her 100th career goal with the Panthers' first tally of the second half, as sophomore
Alison Johnson set a new single game record for points (11), previously set by Devan Crimi in 2014 (10).
Adelphi (10-1, 9-0 NE10) had jumped out to a 9-0 advantage after just 18 minutes of action. Johnson,
Lena Riportella and
Beth Ann Pierce had each contributed two goals in that time before Southern Connecticut (3-7, 2-5 NE10) broke the silence.
They netted their only goal of the half at the 12-minute mark - an unassisted shot from Carolynn Keal.
Kole Pollock, who led the team in goals in the victory, notched a hat trick in the remaining time of the first half, helping the Brown and Gold hold a 16-1 lead heading into the break.
The Owls fell short in every team stat, but matched saves between the pipes and held the advantage in draw controls over the hosts, 13-9. They were also awarded six free position shots, compared to the Panthers zero.
The first goal of the second half, less than a minute in was netted by Scannell, who in four seasons reached the milestone, joining over 15 others in the record book. In addition to her lone tally of the contest she added two helpers and won two draw controls to help secure the win. The battery of Pollock and Johnson connected four different times in the double-digit victory, as defensively the Panthers allowed the least amount of goals all season.
Riportella was responsible for the final goal for Adelphi, as late turnovers and shots that missed the mark spelled the home team. Southern Connecticut, who added their second goal at the 24:58 mark in the second frame got in the last word, scoring against
Hailey Peterson with under three to play in regulation, but the deficit was too great to overcome as the Panthers won their tenth straight and ninth against league opponents.
The women's program is back in action on Saturday, April 7 at LIU Post. The annual tradition between LIU Post and Adelphi is renewed for another season, as alumni from both universities are invited to participate in a friendly contest in conjunction with the
4:00 p.m. matchup with potential NCAA Tournament implications.
Each season, the host university chooses a charitable cause to play in honor of and help raise monetary funds for, with all donations assisting in the medical expenses of an LIU Post alumnus' son who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.Rather than charging admission for
Saturday's contest, LIU Post is asking that each fan in attendance make a minimum $5 donation.
