Garden City, N.Y. - A game-winning home run by third baseman
Brett Malm propelled the Adelphi University baseball team past Northeast-10 Southwest Division opponent, Southern Connecticut State, 3-2.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the eighth inning, after Adelphi scored a run in the third to tie the game from a 2-1 deficit, Malm smoked his fourth long ball of the season over the left field fence for the game-winning run.
Tom Ambrosino pitched three complete innings after relieving
Daniel Taggart in the seventh to earn the win for the Brown and Gold, as the sophomore allowed just one hit and two strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Malm and
Steven Withers led the home team in hits, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, with Malm tallying two RBIs as well. Withers kicked things off for the Adelphi (17-13-1, 8-7 NE10) offense in the first inning, with a double to center field, and later stole home following a pickle at first and second base.
However, the Owls (16-16, 1-6 NE10) answered in the next inning, tacking two runs on the board off an RBI double by Mike Giordano.
Malm was credited the sacrifice fly for the tying run in the third, as
Tyler Becker scored the tying run after singling to the infield, stealing second and advancing to third on an error.
The Brown and Gold will return to the diamond tomorrow against non-conference opponent, Kutztown University. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Kutztown, Pa.
