Kutztown, Pa. - Behind three RBIs from Lucas Terwilliger, the Adelphi University baseball team scored its 10th win in its last 12 games with a 6-1 non-conference victory over the Kutztown University Golden Bears on Wednesday afternoon.
The junior outfielder tied a career-high in RBIs in the victory, as he went 2-for-4 across the game and drove in both the Panthers' first run and last two. Terwilliger was one of two Panthers to tally two hits in the game, as first baseman Thomas Colombo also went 2-for-4 in the contest, and scored twice.
The Panthers (18-13-1) went up 1-0 in the third inning of the non-league affair off a single through the right side by Terwilliger, which brought home Withers who previously stole second and advanced on a wild pitch. Kutztown's starter Garrett Alread's command was the story in the inning, as he walked two of his four total in the frame in the ensuing batters and the free base to Colombo put the visitors up 2-0.
The score remained the same for four more innings until a Lawrence Cicileo double down the left field line drove home Colombo home from second, increasing the Panthers' lead to 3-0 in the seventh. An inning later, a base hit and a stolen base by Withers allowed Becker to tally an RBI on a single up the middle, and Terwilliger later put up two RBIs of his own off a double to left center, bringing Becker and Malm across the plate.
Sitting with a 6-0 lead, the Brown and Gold were one inning shy of a shutout victory, until Evan Musto of Kutztown doubled to left field with two batters on base, tallying one run for the Golden Bears in the bottom of the eighth. However, Troy Simpson struck out the last two batters of the frame to end the inning, and Nicolas Luc retired the side in order to seal the win.
In his third start of the season, freshman Max Steele struck out the first five Kutztown batters to face him, and went four innings with just one hit allowed in total.
The Panthers return home for a series with Northeast-10 opponent, American International College, this weekend. The three-game series begins on Saturday with a doubleheader at 12 and 3 p.m., as Saturday's festivities will also include a dedication ceremony for the team's new clubhouse.
