Baseball Drops Doubleheader At Saint Rose to End Win Streak

Albany, N.Y. - Despite leading in both games, the Adelphi University baseball team's attempt at a 10-game winning streak ended following Saturday's doubleheader against Northeast-10 Conference opponent, The College of Saint Rose.

The Brown and Gold went 1-2 in the series against its Southwest Divisional foe, following the Saturday sweep.

Tyler Becker finished the day going 5-for-9 across two games and two runs for the visiting team, while Thomas Colombo hit a three-run homer in the first game of the contest for his fourth of the season.

Game 1: STR- 4, AU- 3

Colombo got things started for the Brown and Gold (16-13-1, 7-7 NE10) in game one, launching his homer to right field in his first at-bat in the opening inning.

The first baseman finished game one with three RBI, and the Panthers' only runs of the game.

Ed Baram went 5.2 innings on the bump for the Brown and Gold, letting up four runs to the home team before being relieved by Kieran McLaughlin and Mark Novello. Max Steele closed the game for the Panthers, striking out one batter.

Saint Rose (12-15, 5-7 NE10) got on the board in the fourth on a solo homer by Joe Foran which cut into the Panther lead. Two innings later, the Golden Knights flipped Adelphi's lead, ultimately resulting in the 4-3 decision. An RBI courtesy of Connor Farrington cut Adelphi's lead to two, before Michael Shine tied the game 3-3 off a single through left side to bring a runner home.

Two batters later, Shine made his way around the diamond to score Saint Rose's final run on an RBI single.

Game 2: STR - 6, AU - 5

A hard-fought second game by both squads saw three lead changes, but Saint Rose walked off with two in the bottom of the ninth for the victory.

Max Steele was dealt the loss after Saturday's second game, falling to 2-2 on the season. Senior pitcher Michael Tarpey started on the mound for the Panthers, fanning five batters across six innings.

Both teams were silent through the first two frames, until Saint Rose took the lead, going up 2-0 in the third. Mark Powell grounded out to bring Matt McKinnon home from third. A single to left field by the next batter gave the Golden Knights the 2-0 advantage over the Panthers.

Saint Rose was able to tack on one more run in the following inning on an RBI double to left field, putting the hosts up 3-0. However, the Panthers ended the Black and Gold's six-inning shutout, scoring their first run in the seventh. Two base hits and a fielding error allowed Becker to reach on a fielder's choice, driving home Lucas Terwilliger from third.

The Panthers tied the game, 3-3 in the eighth after Brett Malm roped a double, setting up a Terwilliger sacrifice fly which plated Tyler Warshefskie. An error by the Saint Rose shortstop sent Malm home as the tying run of the game in the next at-bat.

The Golden Knights took the lead once again to answer Adelphi before the Brown and Gold got ahead in the top of the ninth.  Becker and Lawrence Cicileo took advantage of back-to-back wild pitches to go up 5-4 on the home team, but Saint Rose answered once again in their half, tacking two more runs to clinch the win.

An error, a walk and a single loaded the bases full of Golden Knights, and the game-winning run crossed the plate on a second bases-loaded walk.

The Brown and Gold will continue its road stretch on Tuesday in a rescheduled contest with Southern Connecticut State University. The first pitch will be hurled at 3:30 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
