Baseball's Streak Hits Eight with 7-4 Win at Saint Rose

Albany, N.Y. - After finishing off a seven-game homestand undefeated, the Adelphi University baseball team kicked off a weekend three-game set at the College of Saint Rose with a 7-4 victory on Friday night, running its winning streak to eight straight, and six straight in Northeast-10 play.

Thomas Colombo, Brandon Morse and Tyler Warshefskie each drove in a pair for Adelphi in Southwest Division victory, as the trio went a combined 6-for-9 with four runs scored in the middle of the order. Three early runs was enough in support of Michael Demarest, who allowed one unearned run in 5.1 innings, before Mark Novello and Daniel Taggart relieved him, combining to throw 2.2 innings with one hit and five strikeouts.

The Panthers led 7-1 headed to the bottom of the ninth inning, and though the Golden Knights scored three against David Butler in the frame, the senior closed the door and stranded two on base with the tying run at the plate to help the Brown and Gold improve to 3-4 in-division.

Adelphi got on the board in the second inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly to left field by Lucas Terwilliger to bring home Colombo from third. Two innings later, the visitors tacked on two more runs off a double by Brandon Morse which knocked in a pair, opening up Adelphi's lead to 3-0.

The score remained for three more innings until Saint Rose (10-15, 3-7 NE10) scored its first run of the evening after Kenny Fils-Aime reached on a fielder's choice with three runners on base. However, Adelphi responded in its final inning, scoring three consecutive runs on the final three at-bats.

With the bases loaded courtesy of two singles and a walk, a single from the bat of Colombo tallied two RBIs for the first baseman, increasing the Panthers' lead to 5-1. A sacrifice fly for Warshefski, followed by a single to right field by Terwilliger, who was thrown out heading to second, brought home two more runners, putting the Brown and Gold up, 7-1.

Sitting with the six-run lead, the home team to add three more runs in the bottom half of the inning, as three consecutive singles against Butler loaded the bases with no outs. A strikeout, a sacrifice fly, a stolen base and a walk preceded a two-run single for Joe Foran, but Butler rebounded by striking out the tying run in the form of Nicolas Teitter to end the game.

The series between the two Northeast-10 opponents will continue in tomorrow's doubleheader in Albany at 12 and 3 p.m.
