Weston, Fla. - In the first game of its Florida slate, the Adelphi University baseball team clinched victory over Wilmington (Del.), 4-3, in its second walk-off win of the season.
Trailing 3-0 after seven innings and 3-2Â in the bottom of the ninth, the Panthers (3-1-1) won in their last at-bats thanks to an RBIÂ from the bat of Brandon Morse in the final inning, driving in Steven Withers with the game-winning run.
The Wildcats (3-7) took an early lead over Adelphi in the game, as they scored two runs in the first inning after a single to center field, and a throwing error by the Panthers brought Max Carney and Christian Adorno of Wilmington home.
The visiting team later went on to score in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Dakota Graham, increasing its lead to 3-0.
Having been stymied by Zach Rumford for seven scoreless innings, Adelphi answered in the bottom of the eighth inning after Morse tripled to centerfield, to bring home Lawrence Cicileo and Tyler Becker to put the Panthers down by one going into the ninth.
With two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth, the designated 'home' squad on the campus of Broward County Community College, responded once again. Kory Cassara kept the game alive with a left-side single, and thanks in part to a wild pitch, Adelphi tied the score at three when pinch-runner Jordan Milo came around to score off an RBI single from Becker.
The game continued for another three innings before Morse stepped up for his final at-bat to clinch the walk-off win for the Brown and Gold. Morse ended the day with three of the team's four RBIs, and going 2-for-6 at-bat. Camden Orologio and Tyler Becker finished going 2-for-3 and 2-for-5 after 12 innings.
Ed Baram started on the mound for the Panthers, going six innings, striking out five Wilmington players and allowing two runs. Working out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 12th after two walks and a hit, Max Steele earned his first collegiate win on the mound in the walk-off.
The Brown and Gold will play Caldwell University and New Haven on Saturday on the campus of St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Fla. The first game will begin at 2 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. start versus New Haven.Â
