Baseball Splits Day Two Against Regional Foes in Sunshine State

Miami Gardens, FL.- Following yesterday's walk-off win, Adelphi split a pair of games against Caldwell University and University of New Haven on Friday. The Panthers defeated the Cougars in the opener game 4-1, but eventually fell to the Chargers, 11-1 later in the evening.

Game 1- Adelphi 4, Caldwell 1

Day two of the Panthers trip south began with a victory over Caldwell University (0-1) in Adelphi's first game of its double header Friday afternoon, 4-1.

Both teams got off to a slow start, scoring the first of their runs in the fourth inning. With batters on first and third, Kevin Goldman, of the Cougars, singled through the right side gaining Caldwell's first and only run of the game. Adelphi responded in the next half inning after a triple from Brandon Morse allowed Thomas Colombo to bring him home on a single up the middle.

Tha Panthers gained two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Michael Cattani stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and advancing on a wild pitch, plating Colombo. Shortly after with the bases loaded once more, Tyler Becker crossed home plate courtesy of a sacrifice fly off the bat of Steven Withers.

In the bottom of the eighth, Colombo tallied another RBI, bringing in Brett Malm on a double to center field to score the final run on the day for the Brown and Gold. Colombo went 2-for-3 after nine innings, tallying two RBI and one run for Adelphi. Withers finished game one going 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Matthew O'Connor started on the mound for Adelphi, striking out four Caldwell batters. Kieran McLaughlin however, was credited the win after the Panthers broke the stalemate and captured the lead in the bottom of the seventh.

Game 2- New Haven 11, Adelphi 1

In the second game of the day, Adelphi (4-2-1) fell to the undefeated Chargers of New Haven, 11-1 on Friday evening.

New Haven (8-0) jumped out on the Panthers early, scoring five of their seven runs in the first inning. The 5-0 run began off a single to right field from the bat of Jack Zagaja of New Haven, beginning the stretch of RBIs for the Chargers. Following Zagaja, Joe Caico and Andrew Garcia brought in four runners off a triple to right field and a home run by Garcia.

The Chargers saw success again in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and Garcia at-bat. The first basemen tallied three RBIs off a double to right center, increasing the score 10-1 in favor of New Haven. Garcia was later brought home to score the final run of the night off a ground out from Rob Giovanelli.

Adelphi's lone run of the evening was credited to Brett Malm after Tyler Warshefskie reached on a throwing error in the top of the second inning. The Panthers were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest, as the Charger bullpen struck out seven and scattered just five hits. Malm finished going 2-for-4 and Jordan Milo recorded a hit in his pinch hit appearance in the top of the eighth.

Pitchers Troy Simpson and Mark Novello did not allow any runs by New Haven over the course of two innings.

The Brown and Gold return to action tomorrow against Northeast 10 competitor American International College. The first pitch is set for 11 a.m. on the campus of Lynn University.
