Garden City, N.Y. - A stretch of six unanswered goals in the first half gave the 10th-ranked Adelphi University men's lacrosse team a lead it would never relinquish on Thursday night, as the Panthers recorded a 22-7 win over St. Thomas Aquinas in their home opener on Motamed Field.
A total of 13 different players scored for the Panthers (2-1) in the game, which was knotted at 2-2 in the first quarter before Adelphi scored six straight - and 12 of the last 13 goals of the first half to take command against their East Coast Conference foes.
It was
Dylan Crossan who led Adelphi in points for the second game running behind six assists, while
Michael Osmundsen chipped in five points behind a team-best four goals and an assist. Rookie
Angelo Caiazzo added three goals on five shots, and classmate
Michael Paccione added a goal and three assists for four points.
Also chipping in on both sides of the ball was
Ian Kirby, who scored twice and assisted on two more tallies, while
Nick Genova,
James Hall,
John Arcidiacono and
Quintin McKenna all recorded at least two points.
The Panthers took a staggering 57 shots to the Spartans' 28 in the game, helped in part by dominance by the face-off duo of
Mark Andrejack and
Phillip Brady. Andrejack won 13-of-16 in the game with six ground balls, while Brady was victorious in 12 of 15 attempts in the second half and also picked up six ground balls.Â
After taking an early 2-0 lead on goals by Osmundsen and Arcidiacono less than four minutes into the game, the Panthers were pegged back even thank to two man-up goals by Briele Caples. However, Adelphi never trailed in the game as Kirby got the home team back on top with a man-up score of his own with 2:19 left in the opening period.Â
The Brown and Gold scored eight of the nine goals in the second period and followed that up by scoring seven of nine in the third to score at least 20 goals for the second time in three games so far this season.
