Sixteen Hits Help Baseball to 10-4 Victory Over Mercy

Garden City, N.Y. - After seven innings, and a team batting average of .485, the Adelphi University baseball team defeated Mercy College, 10-4 on Tuesday afternoon on William J.Bonomo Field.

Jonathan Iadevaia led Adelphi (2-1-1) going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, tallying one run and an RBI for the home team, while Steven Withers went 3-for-5 with three RBIs in the leadoff spot.

The Brown and Gold got on the board right off the bat, scoring two runs in the first inning starting with singles from Withers and Iadevaia.

The opening inning saw with four straight singles from the Panthers, with RBIs from the bats of Brett Malm and Thomas Colombo bringing Withers and Iadevaia home and giving Adelphi an early 2-0 lead.

Nonetheless, Mercy (3-10-0) answered against Michael Demarest in the top of the second by getting two men on base, who both later scored on a throwing error by Adelphi.

A series of runs came in the bottom of the fifth for the hosts with the game later tied at 3-3, after taking advantage of two key errors by the visitors in the field. After Tyler Becker and Lucas Terwilliger got on first and second base, Tyler Warshefskie's bunt single turned into two bases and the go-ahead run, following a throwing error on Mercy's third baseman.

With Withers back at the plate, a single up the middle brought home Terwilliger and Warshefskie, making the game 6-3. Shortly after, Withers stole second with Iadevaia at-bat, waiting to make the game 7-3 on the junior's single to center field.

The bottom of the sixth inning brought in the final three runs for the Panthers, kicking off with a double from Brandon Morse down the left field line. Singles from Becker and Terwilliger brought Morse home, followed by pinch-hitter Kevin Krippel's line drive sacrifice fly to center field and Withers' double to left center, sealing the game at 10 runs for Adelphi.

Junior pitcher Kieran McLaughlin claimed the win as the fourth Adelphi pitcher of the game, after relieving Mark Novello and Robert Sciarrotta in the top of the fifth inning. McLaughlin struck out one Maverick and gave up zero runs.

Demarest made his first collegiate start on the mound, and scattered four hits over 2.2 innings of work.

The Brown and Gold return to action after traveling south for its annual Florida slate, starting with Wilmington (Del.) on Friday, March 9. First pitch is at 7 p.m. in Weston Fla.
