Garden City, N.Y. - One win, a tie, and a loss completed the opening weekend on William J. Bonomo Field for the Adelphi University baseball team against Franklin Pierce.
Both squads came out with a win in the series after the final game ended in the ninth due to darkness, 2-2.
Franklin Pierce (5-2-1) jumped out on Adelphi (1-1-1) in game one scoring three runs out of the gate in Sunday's first contest, as the Ravens prevailed after nine innings, 10-3. Starting pitcher, Daniel Taggart was credited with the loss after letting in five runs before four relievers finished the game for Adelphi.
In game two, Michael Tarpey started on the hill for the Brown and Gold, holding Franklin Pierce scoreless until the top of the fifth. A play at the plate ended the game kept the game knotted at two, before the umpires called the contest due to darkness.
Game 1 - FPU 10, AU 3
The Ravens picked up a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, after a home run from Jonel Ozuna brought home John Friday and Adam Chase. Franklin Pierce went on to score two more runs before going up 10-1 in the fifth inning thanks to a five-run burst in the top of the fifth.
Ozuna kick-started things for the visitors once again with a one-out double down the left field line, which advanced Stephen Octave to third. An error, a groundout and a single to center field later gave the Ravens three more runs, before a wild pitch brought home their final run of the day.
The first of Adelphi's three runs came in the first courtesy of a sacrifice fly to right field from Michael Cattani, which plated Steven Withers home, making the score 3-1 in the bottom of the first. The Panthers did not cross the plate again until the sixth inning off an RBI double from Tyler Warshefskie.
The final run for the Panthers came from Jack Thorsen in his first collegiate appearance, as he reached on a single, later advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an error by the third baseman.
Game 2 - FPU 2, AU 2
After nine innings, game two of Sunday's double header was called a tie, 2-2 due to darkness on the field. The Panthers got out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning after Thomas Colombo hammered a triple down center field, allowing Brandon Morse's single up the middle to bring him home on the next play. Shortly after, Morse scored on a single by Lucas Terwilliger to right field.
In the top of the fifth, Franklin Pierce answered with three hits to put two batters on base, and an RBI late from the visitors' designated hitter, Mike Coggeshall. Coggeshall next crossed the plate off a single from Brad Roberto to bring the Ravens even.
From there, David Butler relieved Tarpey in the fifth, striking out two batters and allowing no runs for the visiting team.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, Colombo reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Malm to second and Jonathan Iadevaia to third; however, Withers was a second too late getting home and was called out in Adelphi's best scoring chance for the duration.
Both teams remained scoreless before the game was called at 2-2.
The Brown and Gold will host Mercy College on Tuesday, March 6 (originally scheduled for Wednesday) on WIlliam J. Bonomo Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
