Garden City, N.Y. – With a commanding advantage in shots taken, the Adelphi University men's lacrosse team secured their third straight Northeast-10 Conference victory with a 17-9 decision against Southern New Hampshire.
Leading the team in points and goals was
Nicolas Racalbuto, who finished with seven points courtest fo five goals and two assists.
Brian Smith did his part on the other end of the field, causing three turnovers, but also adding a helper along the way. Also finishing with seven points was
Ian Kirby behind four goals as eight other team members scored solo goals in the victory.
Penmen goalkeeper Neal Murray racked up a career-high 19 saves despite the loss. Zach Tanner and Corey Cairo both contributed two goals apiece for the visitors.
After the opening quarter, Adelphi (4-1, 3-0 NE10) held just a 2-1 lead despite 13 shot attempts from the offense. Scoring first for the home team was
John Arcidiacono, with a helper from Kirby. The Penmen netted an early equalizer, but
Nicolas Racalbuto was able to give the hosts the advantage heading into the second frame.
Chris West found a way past McDougal right off the bat, but the Brown and Gold responded with three consecutive goals, including back-to-back from Racalbuto. Another Penmen goal stood between a four-goal spurt for the hosts, which was capped with a career-first tally from
Justin Napolitano, giving Adelphi a 9-3 advantage.
Before the half expired, SNHU scored for the first time in eight minutes, but still trailed by five at the half.
Adelphi came out with two goals to keep the visitors at bay out of the break, but allowed two more tallies from the Penmen before a four-goal run put them up 10 at the conclusion of the third frame.
Sean McGovern found his way to the offensive zone at the 1:45 mark, scoring his first collegiate goal off a pass from
Hunter Hayes. Neither team scored for the first seven minute of the final period, although the home team had plenty attempts at the goal. A shot from
Angelo Caiazzo trickled by Murray for the Panthers' final tally of the afternoon, but was quickly followed by three SNHU goals after the 6:45 mark.
The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, March 28 when they travel to take on #7 Pace University. The top-10 matchup will take place at Pace Stadium on the Pleasantville Campus.
