Five-Run First Inning Helps Baseball to Win Over American Int'l at Lynn

Boca Raton, Fla. - Behind a team batting average of .358 and three home runs, the Adelphi University baseball team powered past American International College, 10-4, on Sunday afternoon on the campus of Lynn University in Florida.

Adelphi (5-2-1) got off to a hot start, scoring half of its total runs in the first inning against Yellow Jacket starter Zac Brittain, as Steven Withers set the tone for the game with a lead-off home run to left field to kick things off for the Panthers.

Tyler Becker made it a 2-0 game off an RBI single from that scored Brett Malm, who singled ahead of Brandon Morse being hit by a pitch, and Adelphi later jumped up three more runs following Tim O'Connor's first collegiate home run - a second long ball to left - with two outs in the inning.

After scoring two more runs in the second and one in the fourth, the Panthers upped their lead to 8-0 going into the fifth inning, where they tacked on one more on an infield sinlge off Withers' bat.

The Yellow Jackets (2-4) finally got on the board and broke up the shutout effort of Michael Tarpey in the bottom of the inning, however, as they loaded the bases on a single, double and a hit batter. A throwing error by the Panthers brought in the first run, before Matt Krause drove in Trent Dillon on a sacrifice fly to right field. Brendan Carter scored shortly after for the Yellow Jackets following a Reed Phillips single to right center, making the game 9-3.

Kory Cassara accounted for Adelphi's 10th run of the game in the sixth, with a two-out RBI double that allowed Malm to score his third run of the game. American International tried to hold on in its last at-bats, scoring its fourth run in the ninth inning after two walks an a single, but Robert Sciarrotta retired the final two batters to preserve the Adelphi win.

With Michael Tarpey starting on the hill for Adelphi, the senior pitcher went six innings and held the Yellow Jackets scoreless for five. Tarpey was credited with the win to move to 1-0 on the season, after scattering eight hits and five strikeouts over six innings.

The Panthers return to the diamond tomorrow to take on NAIA foe Saint Thomas University. The first pitch will be hurled at 6 p.m.
