Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Hoops Can't Overcome Slow Start in Setback at New Haven, 58-44

New Haven, Conn. - A sluggish first quarter, in which the offense scored just five points, put the Adelphi University women's basketball team behind on the road at the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon, and the Panthers were largely unable to overcome their early deficit en route to a 58-44 defeat in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Adelphi missed its first 11 field goal attempts in the game, finally scoring from the floor on a Simone Hobdy jumper with 50 seconds left in the opening stanza. Hobdy scored all five points for the Brown and Gold from the line in the first period, but Adelphi was the beneficiary of some missed opportunities by New Haven, which also shot just 4-for-13 in the first frame to lead 11-5 after one, and 22-17 at the break.

The Panthers only held the lead in the contest for 1:35 overall, as they started the third quarter with a burst by scoring nine of the first 12 points of the second half. Hobdy, Emily Miccile and Fallyn Stephens all sank baskets to give Adelphi its first lead at 26-25, but New Haven rebounded with a 14-4 run over the last 6:27 to take the lead for good.

The Panthers (11-13, 7-9 NE10) dropped their third straight game despite 20 points from Hobdy, her fifth 20-point output of the season. Hobdy proved to be Adelphi's go-to scorer in a tough first half, as she totaled 11 of Adelphi's 17 points over the first 20 minutes. Emily Miccile adding some scoring depth for the Panthers in the second half, as the freshman came off the bench in the game for 12 points and seven rebounds.

Natalie Fekula corralled 10 rebounds for the Brown and Gold on defense, pulling down double figures for the third time in the past four games, and also tied a career-high with four blocks. The Panthers were held to their lowest-scoring output of the season in the setback, as they were held to under 30 percent shooting from the floor for the third time this year.

For the Chargers (9-12, 5-11 NE10), three players tallied in double figures, led by 17 from Alexandria Kerr to go along with her five rebounds and four steals, which Micah Womack scored 16 off the bench with nine rebounds. Brie Pergola also added 11 in the victory.

The Brown and Gold return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 6 to host the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose at 5:30 p.m. The Panthers will celebrate Think Pink night, and donations will be accepted during the game to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.
