West Haven, Conn. - A three-point lead at halftime was not enough for Adelphi University men's basketball as they suffered a 76-73 setback at the University of New Haven Saturday afternoon.
Adelphi (8-16, 4-12 NE10) used a balanced first half showing to ultimately hold the lead at the break, with the help of seven points apiece from
Jack Laffey and
Terrel Martin-Garcia. The visitors also managed two more shots than the hosting Chargers (13-8, 10-6 NE10) in the opening frame, keeping the home team to a sub-40 shooting percentage for the half.
New Haven led for nearly all of the first half, until back-to-back three-pointers from the Brown and Gold at the two-minute mark shifted momentum in favor of Adelphi. Several missed shots down the stretch saw the visiting team head to the locker room with the upper hand.
Nick Cambio extended the Panther lead coming out of the break, as his only contributions all contest. The teams battled to maintain control as a five-point lead was no match for the home team as they stormed back to regain the advantage with about four minutes remaining in regulation. Laffey finished the game with 21 points, as the starting five only accounted for 20 boards in the loss.
Martin-Garcia and
Conor McGuinness both chipped in a double-figure effort with 14 and 10, respectively as 11 bench points from
Doug Chappell added depth to the scoring for the visitors. The Chargers used 5-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe to help seal the deal in the NE10 matchup, to come away with a 76-73 decision in Charger Gymnasium.
The Brown and Gold return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 6 to host the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose at 7:30 p.m. The Panthers will celebrate 3.0 night, an annual celebration of all 3.0 student-athletes from the 2017 spring and fall semesters at halftime.
