Garden City, N.Y. - A well-rounded effort for the Adelphi University men's basketball team gave the Panthers an 88-62 victory over second-place College of Saint Rose Tuesday evening in the Center for Recreation and Sports.
Tavon Ginyard led all players with 21-points using 7-for-11 shooting from the field and four three-pointers to bolster his stat line.
Terrel Martin-Garcia nearly missed a double-double with none rebounds and 17 points as two other players rounded out double-digit scoring, with
Michael Coffey and
Nick Cambio scoring 16 and 14, respectively.Â
The Panthers (9-16, 5-12 NE10) held the Golden Knights (16-7, 11-4 NE10) to their fifth lowest scoring output this season, as the hosts scored 27 points off turnovers and relied on 37 points from the bench to capture the win. Adelphi came out on fire in the opening frame, taking a 16-7 lead six minutes into the contest. Four straight three-pointers from the home team allowed the home team to roll to a 19-point advantage which continued to grow with help from the free throw line and beyond the arc.Â
Saint Rose found themselves trailing by at most 28 in the first half, when a fast break from Cambio made it 45-17 on the scoreboard. The final three points of the half went to the Golden Knights, but Adelphi still maintained a 20-point lead heading into the locker room.Â
Back-to-back free throws from Ginyard at 12:52 in the second gave the hosts their largest lead of the game at 33, a deficit Saint Rose tried to diminish with a few shots strung together, but the shooting for the Panthers was too great. For the game, Adelphi was over 50 percent from the floor which included an even 50 percent from long range (14-for-28).Â
Josh Nunez made his third appearance this season for Adelphi and knocked down his first career-triple to record his first three points in a Panther uniform.
Sean Campbell also received minutes in the victory and came away with his first two career points in the second half.Â
The Golden Knights were led by senior Julian Lipinski, who notched his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 boards as fellow senior Jack Jones came off the bench to contribute a team-leading 15 points.Â
The men's basketball team is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 10 when they host Pace University at 3:30 p.m.Â
