Garden City, N.Y. - Behind a career-best 24 points from
Niajah Morgan, the Adelphi University women's basketball team earned a near wire-to-wire victory over the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose inside the Center for Recreation and Sport on Wednesday night, 60-49.
Adelphi (6-3, 4-1 NE10) surrendered the first basket of the contest but never trailed again, thanks in part to Morgan's career-best evening. The senior guard notched her second 20-point performance in the span of five games, scoring 17 in the first half.
She was helped in the effort by
Fallyn Stephens and
Emily Miccile, with the former scoring 13 points and the latter notching her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, plus a career-high four blocks.
On the defensive end, Adelphi held Saint Rose (4-4, 2-4 NE10) to under 30 percent shooting from the floor, as
Leonie Edringer also hauled in a team-high 11 rebounds to assist on the glass.Â
Morgan scored nine points over the first 10 minutes to help Adelphi lead 15-12 at the close of the first quarter, and an 11-2 scoring run over the first four-plus minutes of the second period helped the home team lengthen its lead to a half-high 12 at 26-14.
Despite Saint Rose whittling the deficit to five, a brief scoring spurt over the final 1:48 saw the Panthers tally seven of the last eight points to take an 11-point lead at the break, 35-24.
The Panthers built a lead as much as 18 in the third quarter, which ballooned to 20 points in the fourth thanks to a 6-0 spurt which started the period. It was that early offense which gave the Brown and Gold enough of a cushion to ride out the victory, despite scoring just one point total over the final 5:41 of the contest.Â
The Panthers have a quick turnaround in their return to action, as they head back to the CRS for a 1:30 p.m. conference contest against American International College on Saturday, Dec. 8. The first 100Â fans will receive a free pair of Adelphi-branded sunglasses, in the last game day giveaway of the fall semester.
