Second Half Comeback Sinks Women's Hoops vs. East Stroudsburg, 81-74

Garden City, N.Y. - Despite building a game-high 13-point lead in the second quarter and leading by 10 at halftime, the Adelphi University women's basketball team dropped its final contest of the 2018 calendar year on Saturday afternoon inside the Center for Recreation and Sport to East Stroudsburg University, 81-74.

A torrid start from the floor by Leonie Edringer, who scored a game-high 22 for the second straight contest and recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds, saw her score the first eight points of the game for the Panthers (6-5) and 12 overall in the opening quarter to help Adelphi lead 22-12 after the first 10 minutes.

The lead grew to as much as 13 (25-12) as Emily Miccile drove to the basket for two on a layup, and knocked down the and one free throw, with 9:30 left in the second, but the Warriors (4-5) showed the kind of hustle that sparked their comeback as they whittled the deficit to as few as three (33-30, 4:51) over the ensuing minutes.

Adelphi scored 11 of the last 15 points of the period to restore a double-digit lead, pushing ahead 44-34 at the break, but ESU responded in a big way by shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor in the second half, and outscoring the Brown and Gold 47-30 overall over the third and fourth quarters.

The visiting team took the lead for good on a layup from Marlene Bassett with 1:27 remaining in regulation, and iced the game at the free throw line by converting on seven of eight attempts at the stripe in the final 30 seconds.

Bassett scored all 14 of her points in the second half, shooting 7-for-8 from the floor over the second 20 minutes, and was joined in double figures by three teammates. Tiffany Lapotsky led the offensive effort for ESU with 17 points and nine rebounds, falling just one short of a double-double.

The Panthers are idle for the holiday break, and return to action on Jan. 2, 2019 when they welcome Division I Brown University to the CRS for a 5 p.m. contest. The Panthers will return to regional opponents on Jan. 5, as they travel to the University of the District of Columbia in the nation's capital, before returning to Northeast-10 Conference play on Jan. 9 at Assumption College.
