Women's Basketball Stays Hot with 63-47 Win at SCSU

New Haven, Conn. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team overcame a slow start and pulled away late to score a key early-season divisional victory in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, taking down the Southern Connecticut State University Owls on the road, 63-47.

Adelphi (5-3, 3-1 NE10) earned its third straight win on the back of Leonie Edringer and Niajah Morgan, with the former tallying her first double-double of the season and the latter falling just one rebound short of her second.

Edringer shot 9-for-18 from the floor for a season-best 20 points, the first 20-point game of her career, and 12 rebounds, just one short of a career best, while Morgan tallied 16 points and nine rebounds overall.

After falling behind 12-4 to start the game in the first quarter, as SCSU (5-2, 2-2 NE10) made four of its first five baskets, the Panthers found their scoring touch to take the lead after one, and hardly relinquished the advantage after that.

A 10-0 scoring run, capped by a Morgan three-pointer, gave Adelphi its first lead of the game, before Ashley Sampson and Edringer later scored six of the last eight points of the period by either side to give the Panthers a 20-19 lead after the first 10 minutes.

Adelphi ripped off another 10-0 scoring run to begin the second quarter, holding the Owls scoreless over the first 5:53 en route to building its largest lead of the game at 30-19, and led by nine at the break.

SCSU pushed hard in the second half, and held the Brown and Gold to just seven points in the third quarter, using a 13-7 edge to cut the visiting lead to just three at 43-40 headed to the last period.
An Imani Wheeler layup made it a one-point game at 43-42 on the first basket of the final frame, but Edringer helped the Panthers take over from there -- scoring seven in an 11-0 run that helped put the game away.

The Panthers return home for their next three contests before the New Year, all tipping within the next two weeks. The stretch begins on Wednesday evening inside the Center for Recreation and Sport, as Adelphi welcomes Saint Rose to Garden City for a 5:30 p.m. NE10 tilt.
