Men's Basketball Set Back by Southern Connecticut, 85-69

New Haven, Conn. - The Adelphi University men's basketball team had their early win streak snapped at Southern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon, after an 85-69 decision handed them their second conference loss of the season.

The Panthers (5-3, 2-2 NE10) were led by Nick Cambio, who recorded his third consecutive double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Jack Laffey and Dejavaughn Utley were also responsible for double-figure points with 16 and 10, respectively, as the former drained 4-7 from three point range. The Owls (3-5, 2-2 NE10) saw five players in double-digits in the victory, with Isaiah McLeod leading the charge with a game-high 26.

Cambio and Utley gave Adelphi their largest lead of the contest in the opening frame, after over ten minutes of action, when they pressed to a nine-point advantage over the home team. A 12-3 run in favor of Southern Connecticut brought the game even once more and with under four to play, the Owls found a groove to take and maintain the upper hand as the teams broke for the locker room. Laffey drained a three-pointer at the buzzer, but the Brown and Gold still trailed by three at halftime.

The Owls never relinquished the late lead that they captured in the first half, and led by at most 19 in the second frame. Laffey and Cambio combined for 8-of-13 shooting from the field in the second, but it was not enough to overcome 61 percent shooting from the hosts. Plagued with turnovers, the Owls produced 25 points off Adelphi miscues, en route to an 85-69 final decision.

The Panthers host three of the final four games in 2018, starting with a conference meeting with the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday, December 5. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the women's contest, which is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
