Volleyball Sweeps Bentley in Senior Day Regular Season Finale

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team capped the regular season on a high with a three-set sweep of visiting Bentley in the Center for Recreation and Sport on Saturday afternoon.

Honoring the class of 2019 before the match - McKenna Clawson, Rebecca Seeba, Amalia Saleh and Madison Canestrari - the Panthers were paced in the 25-23, 27-25, 25-23 victory by 17 kills from junior Sara Bisbe, and a double-double from Clawson behind 10 kills and 10 digs.

A tight match from the first point, both teams hit well for the match, with the Panthers (25-5, 12-2 NE10) hitting .200 overall with 46 kills and the Falcons (11-17, 7-7 NE10) clipping at .239 with 41 kills.

Adelphi trailed early in each of the opening two sets, but regained control using several scoring runs in the match. Trailing 6-3 to begin, the Panthers won eight of of the next 11 points to flip the lead, and led by as much as six before holding Bentley off down the stretch.

In set two, the Falcons led by six as late as 19-13, but a kill from Bisbe sparked a 10-3 scoring run for the Brown and Gold which finally saw it take the lead at 23-22 on a big swing from Cara McKenzie.

Nonetheless, McKenzie needed to swing hard again to save one of the set points the Panthers faced in the set before Bisbe swatted away another, and kills for her and Sara Mandreja pocket the last three points and a 2-0 lead for the Panthers.

Adelphi sprinted out to an 8-4 lead in the third set, but the Falcons roared back for 12 of the next 15 to take a 16-11 lead. Adelphi continued to battle, however, looking to seal the match in three sets, and the Panthers responded with a 14-7 run to close out the match.

Largely on the strength of Bisbe and the serve of Katarina Warburton, the Panthers ripped off seven of the last eight points of the final set, as Bisbe hammered four kills in the stretch and Warburton sealed the match with the team's sixth ace.

Adelphi awaits its opponent for the upcoming NE10 Conference tournament slated to begin Tuesday, Nov. 6. Projected as the No. 2 seed, the Panthers will host a quarterfinal matchup starting at 7:00 p.m. Admission will be $6 for adults, $4 for children/seniors and $1 for students with a valid ID.
