Garden City, N.Y. - Behind its high watermark in scoring so far in the early season, the Adelphi University women's basketball team tallied a 90-75 win over the Lady Chargers of Dominican College on Wednesday night inside the Center for Recreation and Sport.
The 90 points is the most scored by the Panthers (4-3) in a game since a 90-62 non-league win over the University of the District of Columbia on Nov. 26 of last season.Â
With four in double figures,
Fallyn Stephens led all scorers with 21 points off the bench, just two off her career high, as the junior guard sank five three-pointers on the night and shot 8-for-14 from the field overall.
She was joined double figures by
Leonie Edringer and
Julia Strachan, who teamed for 35 points in the paint and behind the arc, respectively, and
Katie Murphy, who tallied 10.Â
Edringer recorded a career-best 18 points and seven rebounds, shooting 6-for-9 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the line, while Strachan tallied 17 points - just one off the career-high she set in the Panthers' 65-59 win at New Haven on Nov. 17 - on 5-for-13 shooting with a total of five treys.Â
As a squad, Adelphi shot over 50 percent from the floor (32-60), and it was rookie
Ashley Sampson who led the way as a facilitator in the Panthers' highest-scoring output of the season. In her collegiate debut, the freshman dished off eight assists, with two points and two rebounds, in just 14 minutes of action in the second half, entering the contest in the third quarter.
After starting the game on a 7-0 run, the Panthers led 23-15 at the close of the first quarter, but an 18-7 run for Dominican over the first 5:13 of the second period put the Chargers on top for the first time at 33-30.Â
From there, however, the Panthers wrestled a lead back that they would never relinquish, thanks in part to sinking seven of eight opportunities given to them at the free throw line through the end of the period.Â
The Brown and Gold return to conference play on Saturday, as they travel to Southern Connecticut State University for a 1:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
