Women's Basketball Holds Off Caldwell, 64-57

Caldwell, N.J. - Despite seeing a 17-point lead trimmed to one possession in the final minute, the Adelphi University women's basketball team held on for a 64-57 victory on the road against the Caldwell University Cougars on Sunday afternoon.

After tying a career-high with 20 points in setback at Le Moyne on Tuesday night, Niajah Morgan tallied her first double-double of the season with a career-best 13 rebounds, as well as 14 points, two blocks, four assists and three steals.

She was joined in double figures by Emily Miccile, who scored 12 off the bench despite fouling out with just 22 minutes played, and eight rebounds with a block. Leonie Edringer rounded out the scoring trio with 11 points and seven boards, as the trio also helped the Panthers hold a 46-33 overall edge on the glass.

After getting out to an early 10-5 lead to start the game thanks in part to two triples from Julia Stachan, Adelphi (3-3) found itself trailing 15-12 at the close of the first quarter.

The Panthers' offense exploded some from there, beginning the second period on a 14-2 run to take a lead that they never relinquished. Adelphi's lead grew to a game-high 13 in the period, and it largely held Caldwell at arms' length from halftime through the third.

The Brown and Gold led by nine at the break, and though Caldwell (0-3) whittled the deficit to seven points late in the third, the Panthers scored the last 10 over the final 3:08 to lead 52-35 after 30 minutes.

The Cougars battled for a 22-12 scoring edge in the final period, including a 12-2 run to begin and a 9-0 from the middle to end, as Ana Gonzalez Martin sunk a layup for two which brought the home team to within three at 60-57 with just 26 ticks on the game clock.

However, Katie Murphy and Edringer kept the hosts at bay by each converting their free throws down the stretch to give Adelphi it's first non-league win of the season.

The Panthers are back in action for more non-conference action on Wednesday night, as they welcome the Chargers of Dominican College to the CRS at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
