Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strachan Shines Early, Women's Hoops Rallies Late for 65-59 Win at New Haven

West Haven, Conn. - Kept in it early thanks to hot shooting from Julia Strachan, the Adelphi University women's basketball team pulled off a second thrilling rally in the fourth quarter in the span of four days for a 65-59 win at the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon.

Though the Brown and Gold led 32-29 at halftime, the squad trailed 44-43 after three and needed a 22-15 scoring margin over the final 10 minutes to seal a second straight win.

Emily Miccile put in the go-ahead layup for Adelphi (2-2, 2-0 NE10) with 2:18 remaining in regulation, and Fallyn Stephens - who sank the go-ahead three-pointer in the fourth quarter of Adelphi's win over Pace on Wednesday - added another clutch triple on the next possession to keep the Chargers at arms' length.

Slow out of the gates as an offensive unit, the Panthers fell behind 13-3 with 3:13 left in the opening stanza, but gradually chipped away at the deficit thanks to the sophomore guard's 15 points in the opening half.

Strachan sank her first of five triples in the first half on Adelphi's next possession, and knocked down her fifth to tie the score at 20-20 with 6:51 remaining in the second quarter.

Four of her three-point baskets in the opening half came in Adelphi's seven scoring possessions over the nearly-nine minute span, and the sophomore guard accounted for 18 points in 27 bench minutes - more than doubling her pervious career-high of eight points.

The Panthers' lead grew to a game-high seven thanks to seven unanswered points from 22-22, but the Chargers came roaring back to score seven of the last 10 in the 1:40 before halftime. Neither team could take a lead larger than two in the third quarter, but an overall scoring edge for the home team in the frame had New Haven on top after 30 minutes.

In the starting five, Miccile and Niajah Morgan combined for 20 points and nine rebounds, while Leonie Edringer fell one point short of her first double-double of the season with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Adelphi overcame 26 turnovers in the game thanks in part to strength on the glass, out-rebounding New Haven by a 37-25 margin.

The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday night, as they travel to Le Moyne College for a 5 p.m. NE10 contest.
