Garden City, N.Y. - Even with four players in double-digit scoring, the Adelphi University women's basketball team could not secure a win this opening weekend, dropping an 85-73 decision to LIU Post Sunday even to wrap up the NE10/ECC Challenge.
A dogged effort from
Emily Miccile saw the sophomore net a career-best 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting, despite dealing with foul trouble in 27 minutes on the floor. She was joined in double figures by
Niajah Morgan, who tallied 14 and a team-best six rebounds, while
Fallyn Stephens and
Leonie Edringer each scored 12, with the latter blocking four shots.
LIU Post (2-0), who had five score at least 10, was paced by a double-double from senior forward Sasha Patterson, who tallied 20 with 10 rebounds, while Dominique Williams net 18 points off the bench and Robin Francis added 15.
The Pioneers went 34-for-37 from the free throw line and out-rebounded the Panthers (0-2) by a margin of 48-29.
A pair of triples from Stephens opened the scoring for Adelphi in the opening stanza, but the Green and Gold embarked on a 20-8 scoring run from an 8-8 tie at the 7:40 mark to close the opening stanza.
Trailing by as much as 25 in the first half, a spirited effort from the Panthers saw them out-score the Pioneers 24-11 in the third quarter, but they were unable to whittle the deficit to less than 10 from there on out. Both Morgan and Edringer scored 12 of their points in the second half, with the latter having been kept off the board in the first half after picking up two fouls.
The team will open up Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday, Nov. 14 when it hosts Pace University as the first game of a doubleheader feature starting at 5:30 p.m. The first fans in attendance will receive a 2018-19 Adelphi women's basketball schedule poster.
