Garden City, N.Y. - Despite a game-high 16-point effort from
Leonie Edringer in her Adelphi women's basketball debut, the Panthers dropped the season opener to New York Institute of Technology, on the first day of the ECC/NE10 Challenge, 64-57.
The Bears (1-0) overcame an early deficit to produce a 64-57 victory, holding the host Panthers (0-1) scoreless for nearly the entire second quarter to lead 24-21 at halftime.
Adelphi held a double-digit lead just before the opening 10 minutes expired, as a
Jess Camarda three-pointer capped a 14-6 run for the home team. Neither team scored in the first two minutes of the second frame, until the Bears staged a dramatic 13-2 run featuring contributions from five different point-scorers.
The lone points in the second for the Brown and Gold were from
Emily Miccile, who knocked down back-to-back free throws to remain within three of their opponents at the break.
A lay-in from
Niajah Morgan at 8:41 put the Panthers back on top coming out of the locker room, but not for long as NYIT answered with a three from Shalie Frierson which regained a lead for the Bears that they never relinquished. Morgan was also responsible for double-digit points in the contest, finishing with 12, however the Bears used a 29-8 advantage in bench points throughout the non-league tilt to secure the win.
The Panthers will close out opening weekend with another non-conference tip with LIU Post on Sunday, November 11 at 4:00 p.m.
