Garden City, N.Y. - Behind the strength of nine players with at least one kill, the Adelphi volleyball team chalked up its second straight 3-0 victory earlier this afternoon over the non-conference Griffins of Chestnut Hill College.
The Panthers (15-4) led in every statical category and posted a team hitting percentage of .321 with just 11 errors in 84 attempts in the 25-11, 25-10, 25-21 victory.
Sara Bisbe led all players with nine kills and three service aces while McKenna Clawson and Victoria Bailey combined for 13 kills. Setter Grace Wegmann posted a game-high 22 assists and three blocks while on defense, Sara Mandreja posted a team-high seven digs.
It did not take long for the Brown and Gold to run away with the first set win after finding themselves up 12-6 and then unleashing a 6-0 run to go up by 11. The hosts, on 27 attempts in the set, tallied 13 kills without a single error and hit .428. Bisbe accounted for three of the final five points of the set, hammering home three kills to allow Adelphi to take the first set, 25-11.
In a similar situation, Danielle MacKnight's team enjoyed the early lead at 12-8 and then once again, behind four kills, one service ace and two visitor errors, used a 7-0 run to build a 10-point cushion. Down the stretch, Adelphi hit an impressive .528 as a team and out-scored their opponents 6-2, securing the second set victory, 25-12.
Prior to the third set, the Panthers never found themselves down by more than a single point, but were looking at a 13-9 deficit. However, they rallied and strung together an impressive 12-1 run with the help of three service aces and four kills to storm back and take the 21-14 lead.
The Griffins (5-12)Â were able to pull to within three toward the end, but Sophia Powless put the nail in the coffin with the final kill to win the set, 25-21.
The squad is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 9 when they host the Chargers of the University of New Haven in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. First serve is slated for a 7 p.m. start in the Center for Recreation and Sport on Dig Pink night. The Panthers will donate all proceeds from their pink ribbon sale to the Sideout Foundation.Â
