Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University field hockey team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference contest to Long Island rival LIU Post on Thursday evening, 4-0.
A career breaking day for the Pioneers Emily Miller and a three-goal first half paced LIU Post (9-4, 8-3 NE10) to the shutout victory, in a game which was postponed from Oct. 9.
The visitors got on the board early in the first half, scoring their first of the first-half three goals 10 minutes into the contest. Sammy Bell of LIU Post rebounded her own shot into the back of the net following a save from Adelphi's (7-6, 5-3 NE10) Leah Savage.
Six minutes later, Bell netted her second of the night off a pass from Miller from the right side, allowing the forward to go one-on-one with the goalie. After another five minutes, Miller scored her first goal of the contest, setting LIU Post's career record in the process, ahead of previous record holder, Carlee Dragon.
The Panthers held the Pioneers scoreless for almost the duration of the second half, however, they could not break the LIU defense to get on the board. With no time left on the clock, the visiting team scored its fourth goal of the contest following a penalty corner to end the game at 4-0.
Both teams remained even in shots throughout the second half, attempting seven shots each, but the ninth-ranked Pioneers held an overall advantage of 21-12. Savage ended the night with 10 saves for the Panthers, blocking seven in the first half, compared to LIU's three. Rachel Vellis nonetheless stopped eight Adelphi shots overall.
The Brown and Gold will host American International College on Saturday afternoon. The game celebrate Adelphi's seniors final contest on Motamed Field at 4 p.m.
