Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Suffers Double OT Heartbreak vs. American Int'l, 2-1

Garden City, N.Y. - Despite a 10th goal off the foot of Kerianne Scorce for the season, the Adelphi University women's soccer team was dealt a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime defeat on Motamed Field on Wednesday night.

American International's Federica Frew launched a perfectly-placed free kick just above a leaping Krista Aliscio in the 102nd minute, capping a comeback victory for the Yellow Jackets (8-8-1, 6-6-1 NE10) in a game in which they trailed 1-0 following Scorce's score in the 33rd minute.

The junior forward took a long run from midfield, weaving her way through defense before finding herself one-on-one with Yellow Jacket keeper Alexandra Sanft, and duly buried the ball across and past her to give Adelphi (8-6-1, 7-6 NE10) the early lead.

However, the Yellow Jackets' offense gained steam as the game wore on, and they eventually found the equalizer in the 71st minute. Anniina Sankoh's first shot on goal was blocked by the Adelphi defense, but Johanna Englund was there to collect the rebound, and snuck the ball to Aliscio's right and into the far post to make it 1-1.

The two clubs played scoreless soccer from there, with the two teams taking seven combined shots through the end of regulation, and just one coming on goal.

Adelphi, which is still alive in the Northeast-10 Conference playoff hunt, closes out the regular season on Saturday afternoon against sixth-place Assumption. The Panthers currently occupy the eighth position in the NE10 standings, with a two-point lead over the Yellow Jackets.

Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m., and prior to the game, the team will honor the class of 2019: Michelle Wienecke, Gianna Romano, Savannah Taylor and Taylor Sipos.
