Garden City, N.Y. - Facing a "win-and-in" situation to reach the Northeast-10 Conference tournament, the Adelphi University women's soccer team fell to the Greyhounds of Assumption College on Saturday night at Motamed Field, 2-0.
The Panthers conclude their season a 8-7-1 overall, with a 7-7 record in the NE10, and miss the league playoffs for the first time since the 2010 season.
Assumption (9-6-2, 8-4-2 NE10) got a goal in each half from Kallie Villemaire in the 25th minute, as she headed in her 13th off the season of a cross from Johnna Caporuscio, before the latter scored her third of the year unassisted in the 54th minute to help put the game on ice.
Greyhound keepers Alexis Nason and Katie Hammer scored a 12-save shutout in the win for the visitors, with each playing a half.
The game marked the return of freshman keeper
Sarah Hofmeier to the Adelphi net, as the freshman missed six games in the second half of the season after suffering a broken nose in a 2-2 tie against the University of Bridgeport on Oct. 2.
Hofmeier made seven saves in the loss, and finished her first year with a 7-2-1 record, and an .875 save percentage, which led the NE10 in the regular season.
Prior to the game, the team honored its class of 2019 in
Taylor Sipos,
Gianna Romano,
Michelle Wienecke and
Savannah Taylor.
