Garden City, N.Y. - A goal in each half anchored the effort of the 13th-ranked Adelphi University men's soccer team in its ninth straight win on Saturday afternoon, as the Panthers snapped the six-match of Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Motamed Field.
James Thristino struck for his team-leading 10th goal of the season for the Panthers (12-2-1, 10-1 NE10) in the 29th minute of the first half, as
Paolo Marciano notched his fourth assist on the opening strike.
John Aydogan made the most of his bench minutes as an injury substitution for Marciano later in the contest, as the transfer from SNHU tacked on his second goal of the year to give the Brown and Gold some insurance at the close of the 64th minute.
A red-hot Ravens (7-8, 6-5 NE10) squad entered the match winners of its last six matches, and their offensive aggression built over the course of the match. The visiting team out-shot the hosts by a margin of 26-14 - including 17-7 in the second half, but
Matt Apicella proved up to the task to record his seventh clean sheet of the Panthers' winning streak.
The junior tallied a career-best 13 saves, with eight coming in the second half, to eclipse the mark of 11 that he set earlier this season in a victory over then-sixth ranked SNHU on the road.
The Panthers will close out the regular-season portion of their home schedule in their next match, as they welcome the Le Moyne Dolphins to Motamed Field for a 7 p.m. contest on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
Prior to the match, Adelphi will honor its graduating senior class.
