North Andover, Mass. -
James Thristino's game-winner in the 93rd minute led the Adelphi University men's soccer team to its seventh straight win on Saturday afternoon, as the Panthers took down the Merrimack College Warriors at Martone-Mejail Field.
Thristino's strike, his ninth goal of the season and third of the winning variety, came nearly nine minutes after Merrimack (9-3, 6-3 NE10) found the equalizer to
Tommy Speed's first goal of the season that gave Adelphi (10-2-1, 8-1 NE10) a 1-0 lead.Â
Speed scored off a pass from
Patrick Guier just 17 seconds into the 76th minute, breaking a scoreless tie which saw 16 combined shots by both teams to that point.Â
Nonetheless, the home team answered under 10 minutes later thanks to Tola Showunmi, who beat
Matt Apicella with just the Warriors' third effort on goal in the game to tie the action at 1-1.
Though both teams combined for 25 shots, with Merrimack taking 14 and Adelphi firing nine, the two clubs combined for just seven shots on goal. Apicella made a save in each half of regulation, while his counterpart Tyler Packett made two in the first 45 minutes.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 17, traveling to the College of Saint Rose for a 7 p.m. NE10Â contest. The game is the Panthers' penultimate road contest of the regular season.
