Syracuse, N.Y. - In front of a decent crowd and the cameras of ESPN3, the Adelphi University men's basketball team suffered a 54-69 defeat at Le Moyne College Wednesday evening, as part of the Division II National Showcase on WatchESPN and the ESPN app.
Junior
Jack Laffey, who reached a career milestone of 1,000 points earlier in the month was the lone player in double-figures for the visitors, using 8-for-16 shooting from three-point range to finish with 26 points. The only other member of Adelphi close to the double-digit mark was
Terrel Martin-Garcia, who ended the contest with nine points and five rebounds. The Panthers (8-15, 4-11 NE10) were outworked on the glass and at the free throw line by the Dolphins (17-5, 14-1 NE10) who had two players off the bench reach double-digit points.Â
The game got out to a hot start for the hosts, who used six unanswered points to lead from the start. Scoring stopped for either side over the following three minutes until a three-pointer from Laffey at 13:47 broke the silence. A 24-6 run from Le Moyne however quickly put the home team at an advantage, capped with back-to-back free throws from Tanner Hyland. Adelphi's final basket of the half was courtesy of Laffey from beyond the arc, his fifth of the contest.Â
Terrel Martin-Garcia and
Nick Cambio were the first to register buckets for the visitors out of the break, but the Dolphins still managed to maintain an extensive lead over their opponents. At nearly the halfway mark,
Tavon Ginyard knocked down a shot from downtown, but the Panthers still trailed by 16 with 10:56 left to play. A 9-4 stretch sparked by a Cambio lay-in allowed AU to get within 12 of the hosts, but it was not enough as Le Moyne continued to find ways past Brown and Gold defenders both in the paint and from three-point range.Â
The teams were even in second chance points but the home team was largely helped by 34 points off the bench compared to Adelphi's five. This contest marks the eighth straight win for Le Moyne, but their first in three contests that their opponents held them to a sub .500 shooting percentage from the field.Â
The men return to action on Saturday, February 3 when they travel to take on the Chargers of the University of New Haven. Game time for the Northeast-10 Conference tilt is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Charger Gymnasium.Â
