Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's basketball team opened the second half of the season with a loss to Assumption College Wednesday evening, dropping a 79-69 final decision. 

Held to its second-lowest scoring output all season, the Brown and Gold trailed by 10 at halftime and ultimately lost the contest by as much in the end. Adelphi brought their deficit to as little as four in the second half, but a 14-2 run from the visiting Greyhounds proved to seal the deal down the stretch. 

In the loss, Adelphi (5-10, 1-6 NE10) was led by Jack Laffey who finished with 21 points courtesy of 7-for-13 shooting from the field. Nick Cambio and Michael Coffey also reached double-figures, accounting for 16 and 14, respectively, combining for 21 rebounds. Doug Chappelle came off the bench to contribute 10 points, knocking down two from beyond the arc. 

The Panthers lone lead came less than a minute into the contest after the first bucket of the contest from Laffey, despite registering two ties in the following minutes. The visitors quickly managed to pull away after several shots did not fall for the home team, using a 14-2 run in the opening eight minutes of the half to lead by 12. Halfway through, the Greyhounds managed to keep their opponents at bay, never falling below a double-figure lead, with a 10-point advantage at the half. 

A layup from Daveyon Barnes at 12:59 sparked a 10-4 run in favor of the hosts to severely cut into the Assumption lead. A Laffey trey brought Adelphi with four with under-10 to play, but seven unanswered points swung momentum in favor of the visiting team, to which they closed out the 79-69 decision. 

Assumption, who shot 55 percent as a team from the field, used a 25-point performance from Ben Vujadinovic, who added two blocks and two steals in the win. Two other players, Joe Sullivan and Matthew Kelly were the two other athletes to reach double-digit points, chipping in 13 apiece. 

Adelphi returned home briefly as they are back on the road for a contest at Saint Anselm College on Saturday, January 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. following the women's game.
