Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team dropped its final crossover contest of the 2017-18 season on Saturday afternoon, falling in a 73-55 decision to the Stonehill Skyhawks, the second-place team in the Northeast Division of the Northeast-10 Conference.
Adelphi (11-11, 7-7 NE10) dropped back to .500 overall and in the league with the setback, and was undone in part by a cold first half from the floor which allowed the 20th-ranked team in Division II to stamp its authority on the contest.
The Panthers made just four of 23 attempts from the floor over the first 10 minutes, while an 8-for-15 showing overall and 5-for-8 from three helped the Skyhawks explode out to a 23-9 lead.
Though Adelphi doubled its shooting percentage in the second period, Stonehill's early lead, coupled with a second quarter over 50 percent shooting, gave the visiting team a 46-25 lead at halftime.
A bright spot for the Panthers on defense was senior
Natalie Fekula, who hauled in a career-high 16 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end.
Niajah Morgan fell one rebound short of a double-double with a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds, while
Simone Hobdy added 12 points.
The Skyhawks (17-2, 13-1 NE10) were paced by 27 points from senior guard Kelly Martin, who sank five three-pointers, while Samantha Hyslip added 14 points.
The Panthers hit the road for their next contest, as they return to Southwest Division play against the Dolphins of Le Moyne College at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31. The game is a part of the Division II national showcase, which will air on ESPN3.
