Garden City, N.Y. - With the help of a career-high from
Terrel Martin-Garcia, the Adelphi University men's basketball team captured a 97-89 Northeast-10 Conference win over Stonehill College Saturday afternoon.
Martin-Garcia led the Panthers with a 21-point performance with 9-for-11 shooting from the field, besting his previous career-best of 19 points at Molloy in December. Four others found themselves in double-figures as
Tavon Ginyard used a hot hand from beyond the arc for 18 points off the bench, with four three-pointers, as he also dished off three assists.
Michael Coffey added 15 points and six rebounds for the Panthers' effort, while
Conor McGuinness flirted with a triple-double behind 11 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds.
Stonehill (11-9, 7-7 NE10) began the game by scoring the first nine points of the contest, and Adelphi (8-14, 3-10 NE10) trailed by a high of 14 with less than 10 minutes left in the first half, but exploded for a 30-16 run to halftime to head to the locker room tied at 56-56.
The Panthers' bench combo of Martin-Garcia and Ginyard did a lot of the heavy lifting in the first half, as they combined for 24 points, while Coffey added 11.
In the second half, Martin-Garcia sank five of his six attempted baskets for 10 points, while seven of Adelphi's eight players who saw action on the floor scored at least four points. The Panthers took the lead for good on a tip-in and one from
Austin Beech with 14:23 remaining in the game, and the contest stayed within two possessions for the duration.
Stonehill attempted to claw back late with timely shooting from deep, as the Skyhawks whittled the deficit to one on three occasions over the final six minutes, but Adelphi had an answer each time. On the final trip up the floor with Adelphi up one at 90-89 with 1:58 on the clock, Martin-Garcia slammed home a dunk, and his blocked shot down the other end led to a three-pointer in transition for Ginyard which kept Stonehill at bay with just 30 seconds on the clock.
The men's basketball team is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 31, when they travel to Le Moyne College to take on the Dolphins at 7:30 p.m.. As a part of the Division II Showcase, the game will be streamed live on ESPN3.
