Garden City, N.Y. - A career night for
Jess Camarda, in which she bested a career-high in scoring by the end of the first half, helped lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a 78-69 victory over second-place Southern New Hampshire in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday night inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
The sophomore transfer from Hartford tallied a team-best 26 points, 16 of which came in the first half, which broke her Adelphi-best of 15 points from a victory over the University of New Haven in November. Camarda shot 8-for-13 from the floor in 29 bench minutes, including 6-for-11 from three-point range, and also pulled down a career-best eight boards.
She led a total of four Panthers (11-10, 7-6 NE10) in double figures, as
Simone Hobdy,
Natalie Fekula and
Niajah Morgan all recorded double-doubles in the victory and helped Adelphi tally a whopping 53-34 margin on the boards. Morgan hauled in a career-high 12 boards, and added 15 points, while Hobdy and Fekula scored 14 and 11 respectively, each grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Penmen (
12-7, 8-5 NE10) got a team-best 21 points from Molly Terry off the bench, while Sarah Deyo contributed a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds, and had three of 10 SNHU blocks. Adelphi held Kylie Lorenzen, the NE10's second-leading scorer at 18.8 points/game and fifth-leading rebounder at 9.4 per game, in check over her 21 minutes, as she fouled out in the fourth quarter. The junior tallied a season-low in points (8) and rebounds (3).Â
After falling behind 8-3 to start the game, Adelphi rebounded in a big way with an 11-0 run over the next two-plus minutes to flip the first quarter on its head an take a 14-8 lead with 4:04 left in the period. Adelphi's run extended to 20-5 to cap the first, and ballooned to 27-5 thanks to the first points of the second, which gave the Brown and Gold a 30-13 lead.
The Brown and Gold began the second by scoring 21 of the first 26 points, as Camarda was responsible for more than half, as the Brown and Gold's lead swelled to a game-high 23 at 41-18 with 4:30 remaining. However, the Penmen clawed back into contention with a 16-3 run to end the period, putting them in the locker room down 10 at 44-34.
Adelphi managed to hold its lead for the last 20 minutes, but not without some late resistance from the Penmen. Twice in the fourth quarter, the visitors whittled the deficit to as little as five, but the Panthers largely took care of business at the free throw line, sealing the win by going 8-for-10 from the stripe.
The Panthers are back in action at home on Saturday, Jan. 27 when they welcome in the Stonehill Skyhawks into the CRS for a 1:30 p.m. NE10 contest. The game will kick off a double-header on Employee Appreciation Day, in which all university staff will receive four complementary tickets to each game. These tickets can be picked up in the athletic department office.
